Classification of Organic Halogen Compounds

Organic halogen compounds are classified two ways. By the number of halogens present: mono-halo compounds carry a single halogen (e.g. C2H5Br, bromoethane) while poly-halo compounds carry two or more (e.g. CCl3-CH2-CH3, trichloropropane). By the hybridisation of the carbon bonded to the halogen: compounds with a Csp3-X bond include alkyl halides/haloalkanes (CH3I, iodomethane), benzylic halides (C6H5CH2Br, benzyl bromide), allylic halides (CH2=CH-CH2-Cl, allyl chloride) and alicyclic halides (bromocyclobutane); compounds with a Csp2-X bond include vinylic halides (CH2=CHI, vinyl iodide) a …

What this figure shows. A branching chart headed 'Organic Halogen Compounds', splitting first into 'Based on number of Halogens' (Mono Halo compounds, e.g. C2H5Br -- Bromoethane; Poly Halo compounds, e.g. CCl3-CH2-CH3 -- Trichloropropane) and, on the other branch, 'Based on the Hybridisation of Carbon attached with halogen' -- itself splitting into 'Compounds containing Csp3-X bond' (Alkyl halides/Haloalkanes, e.g. CH3I -- Iodomethane; Benzylic halides, e.g. C6H5CH2Br -- Benzyl bromide; Allylic halides, e.g. CH2=CH-CH2-Cl -- Allyl chloride; Alicyclic halides, e.g. bromocyclobutane) and 'Compounds containing Csp2-X bond' (Vinylic Halides, e.g. CH2=CHI -- Vinyl Iodide; Aryl halides/Haloarene …
