Carbon compounds carrying more than one halogen atom are poly halogen compounds. Two important dihalide classes are distinguished by WHERE the two halogens sit: (a) gem-dihalides carry both halogens on the SAME carbon, e.g. CH3-CHCl2 (ethylidene chloride, 1,1-dichloroethane) and CH3-CCl(CH3)-Cl -- i.e. (CH3)2CCl2 -- (isopropylidene chloride, 2,2-dichloropropane); (b) vic-dihalides carry the two halogens on ADJACENT carbons, e.g. ClCH2-CH2Cl (ethylene dichloride, 1,2-dichlor …
