Haloalkanes

Mono-halogen derivatives of alkanes are called haloalkanes, general formula R-X, where R is an alkyl group (CnH2n+1) and X is F, Cl, Br or I. Haloalkanes are further classed as primary (1 degree), secondary (2 degree) or tertiary (3 degree) by the type of carbon the halogen sits on: bromoethane, CH3-CH2-Br, is a primary haloalkane (the C-Br carbon bears one other carbon); 2-chloropropane (isopropyl chloride), (CH3)2CH-Cl, is secondary (the C-Cl carbon bears two other carbons); 2-iodo-2-methylpropan …
