Baeyer's reagent is a cold, dilute, and alkaline (e.g. sodium-carbonate-buffered) solution of potassium permanganate. When it is added to an alkene or alkyne, the purple colour of the permanganate is decolourised as the C=C or C-C triple bond is oxidised (via a cyclic diester intermediate) to a vicinal diol, and a brown precipitate of manganese dioxide forms. This decolourisation is used as a simple qualitative test (Baeyer's test) to detect unsaturation in an organic compound.
