Tritium is prepared by neutron irradiation of lithium-6 (6Li + n -> 4He + 3H) inside a nuclear reactor.

Tritium (3H, symbol T) is the radioactive isotope of hydrogen with one proton and two neutrons. Because it occurs only in trace amounts in nature (formed by cosmic-ray interactions in the upper atmosphere) and decays with a half-life of about 12.3 years, it is prepared artificially, mainly by nuclear reactions inside a nuclear reactor.

The standard method bombards lithium-6 with neutrons (produced in the reactor):

6Li + n(neutron) → 4He + 3H (tritium)
