Covalent hydrides are grouped into three classes based on whether the central atom has fewer, exactly enough, or more than an octet of electrons around it: electron-deficient, electron-precise, and electron-rich hydrides.

Covalent hydrides are formed by elements of moderate electronegativity (mainly p-block elements) sharing electrons with hydrogen. They are classified into three types based on the number of valence electrons on the central atom compared to the requirement of a complete octet:

  1. Electron-deficient hydrides: the central atom has fewer than 8 electrons around it even after bonding — it cannot complete its octet with the available hydrogens. Example: B2H6 (diborane), where boron has only 6 electrons around it and forms unusual three-centre two-electron bonds. …
