Angle of Friction

The angle of friction is defined geometrically: it is the angle θ\theta between the normal force NN and the resultant RR of the normal force and the maximum static friction force fs,maxf_{s,max} (i.e. R⃗=N⃗+f⃗s,max\vec R=\vec N+\vec f_{s,max}).

From the right-triangle geometry:

R=fs,max2+N2,tan⁡θ=fs,maxN.R=\sqrt{f_{s,max}^2+N^2},\qquad \tan\theta=\frac{f_{s,max}}{N}.

But since, by the friction law, sliding begins exactly when fs,max=μsNf_{s,max}=\mu_sN:

tan⁡θ=μs.\tan\theta=\mu_s. …

What this figure shows. The resultant R of the normal force N and the maximum static friction fs,max makes an angle θ with N, where tanθ = fs,max / N = μs. …
