Newton's Second Law states that force equals the rate of change of momentum: F = dp/dt, which simplifies to F = ma for constant mass.

Newton's Second Law of Motion is stated as: The rate of change of linear momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied external force, and the change in momentum takes place in the direction of the applied force.

Mathematically, if p = mv is the linear momentum of a body of mass m moving with velocity v, then:

F is proportional to dp/dt

F = k (dp/dt)

With SI units chosen so that the constant of proportionality k = 1:

F = dp/dt = d(mv)/dt

For a body of constant mass, this becomes:

F = m (dv/dt) = ma
