3.7.2

Vehicle on a Leveled Circular Road

For a vehicle of mass mm moving at speed vv on a level (unbanked) circular road of radius rr, three forces act: weight mgmg (down), normal force NN (up), and — critically — the static friction FsF_s between tyre and road, directed horizontally inward, which alone provides the centripetal force (since the road is level, NN simply balances mgmg and contributes no horizontal component):

mv2r=Fs≤μsmg.\frac{mv^2}{r}=F_s\le\mu_smg.

Two regimes follow directly:

  • Safe turn: if mv2r≤μsmg\dfrac{mv^2}{r}\le\mu_smg, i.e. v≤μsrgv\le\sqrt{\mu_srg}, static friction can fully supply the needed centripetal force.
  • Skid: if mv2r>μsmg\dfrac{mv^2}{r}>\mu_smg, i.e. v>μsrgv>\sqrt{\mu_srg}, friction is insufficient, and the vehicle skids outward off its intended circular path. …

What this figure shows. Weight mg acts down, normal force N acts up (N = mg on a level road), and static friction Fs acts horizontally inward, supplying the entire centripetal force. …
