Step 1 (Definition). A calculated result usually combines several measured quantities, each with its own error, possibly from different instruments. Propagation of errors is the set of rules for how the individual errors combine to determine the error in the final result -- depending on both the individual errors AND the mathematical operation used to combine them.

Step 2 (Addition). For Z=A+BZ=A+B with A=A±ΔAA=A\pm\Delta A, B=B±ΔBB=B\pm\Delta B: worst case, Z±ΔZ=(A±ΔA)+(B±ΔB)=(A+B)±(ΔA+ΔB)Z\pm\Delta Z=(A\pm\Delta A)+(B\pm\Delta B)=(A+B)\pm(\Delta A+\Delta B), so ΔZ=ΔA+ΔB\Delta Z=\Delta A+\Delta B -- the maximum error in a sum is the SUM of the individual absolute errors. Example: R1=(100±3) ΩR_1=(100\pm3)\,\Omega, R2=(150±2) ΩR_2=(150\pm2)\,\Omega in series: R=(250±5) ΩR=(250\pm5)\,\Omega. …
