Physical quantities used as variables in an equation or process can be classified based on whether they have dimensions:
Dimensional variables: These are physical quantities that possess dimensions (in terms of mass, length, time, etc.) and whose numerical value can change during a process. Examples: area (L^2), volume (L^3), velocity (LT^-1), force (MLT^-2), acceleration.
Dimensionless variables: These are physical quantities that do NOT possess any dimensions (i.e. their dimensional formula is [M^0 L^0 T^0]) but whose value can still vary. Examples: angle (ratio of arc length to radius), strain (ratio of change in dimension to original dimension), refractive index, specific gravity, Reynolds number.
