Fundamental quantities are the independent base quantities not defined in terms of any others; derived quantities are expressed as combinations (products/ratios) of the fundamental quantities.

Fundamental (or base) quantities are physical quantities that are independent of one another and are not defined in terms of any other physical quantity. The SI system recognises seven fundamental quantities: mass, length, time, electric current, thermodynamic temperature, amount of substance, and luminous intensity, with base units kilogram, metre, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela respectively.

Derived quantities are physical quantities that are defined in terms of two or more fundamental quantities, using mathematical operations like multiplication or division.

Examples of derived quantities:

  • Area = length × length (m^2)
  • Velocity = length / time (m/s) …
