Gross error is the largest source of error in a measurement, arising mainly from the carelessness or inexperience of the person taking the measurement, and not from any fault in the measuring instrument itself.
Reasons for gross error:
- Improper/careless reading of the instrument (e.g. misreading a scale, parallax error).
- Incorrect recording of the observed data.
- Using an instrument with an improper range, or one unsuited to the measurement.
- Wrong setting/adjustment of the apparatus, or forgetting to zero the instrument.
- Applying an incorrect formula or making an arithmetic mistake in the calculation.
How to minimise gross errors:
- Take great care while reading and recording each observation.
- Take a number of readings for the same quantity, instead of just one, and use their mean.
- Have more than one observer take independent readings of the same quantity, and compare them. …
