Surface tension underlies capillary rise, the spherical shape of drops/bubbles, and the cleaning action of detergents, among other applications.

Surface tension is the property by which the free surface of a liquid behaves like a stretched elastic membrane, tending to minimise its surface area. Some real applications:

  1. Capillary action (capillary rise): Due to surface tension and the adhesive forces between a liquid and a narrow tube's walls, liquids rise (or fall) in narrow capillary tubes. This explains the rise of kerosene/oil up the wick of a lamp, the rise of ink in blotting paper, and the rise of water/sap through the narrow vessels in plant stems.

  2. Formation of spherical drops and bubbles: Because surface tension makes a liquid surface tend to have the minimum possible area for a given volume, and a sphere has the least surface area for a given volume, small liquid drops and soap bubbles naturally take a spherical shape (in the absence of other dominant forces like gravity).
