Reynold's number Re = ρvd/η is a dimensionless combination of a fluid's density, flow speed, a characteristic length of the pipe/object, and the fluid's viscosity; it predicts whether the flow will stay smooth (laminar) or become chaotic (turbulent).

Definition: for a fluid of density ρ and coefficient of viscosity η, flowing with a characteristic speed v through a pipe (or past an obstacle) of characteristic length/diameter d, the Reynold's number is:

Re = ρvd / η

Because the units of density, speed, length, and viscosity are chosen so they exactly cancel out, Re has no units — it is a pure (dimensionless) number.

Physical meaning: Re is essentially the ratio of inertial forces (ρv²d², tending to disturb the flow) to viscous forces (ηvd, tending to keep the flow smooth and orderly) in the fluid.
