Hormones are termed chemical messengers because they are chemical signalling molecules that travel through the blood from an endocrine gland to a distant target tissue to produce a specific effect.

Hormones are organic substances secreted in small quantities by ductless (endocrine) glands directly into the bloodstream, rather than through a duct as in exocrine secretion. Once released, a hormone is carried by the blood throughout the body, but it produces its effect only on specific target cells or organs that possess receptor molecules capable of specifically recognising and binding that hormone; cells lacking the appropriate receptor are unaffected even though the hormone reaches them via circulation. Upon binding its receptor, the hormone triggers a defined biochemical or physiological response in the target cell, such as altering gene expression, enzyme activity, or membrane transport.
