Hyperglycemia refers to a blood glucose (sugar) concentration that is higher than the normal physiological range. Normally, the hormone insulin (secreted by the beta cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans) enables body cells to take up glucose from the blood for energy use or storage, keeping blood glucose within a narrow normal range. Hyperglycemia results when this regulation fails — either because too little insulin is produced, or because body cells become resistant to insulin's action.
The major disorder associated with chronic hyperglycemia is Diabetes mellitus, of which there are two principal types:
- Type 1 diabetes: the pancreatic beta cells are destroyed (often autoimmune), so little or no insulin is produced.
- Type 2 diabetes: the body's cells become resistant to insulin, and/or insulin production becomes insufficient over time, often linked to obesity/lifestyle factors. …
