A dislocation occurs when the articulating bones at a joint are forced out of their normal alignment, disrupting the joint's structure and function, often accompanied by pain, swelling, and loss of movement. Based on the underlying cause, dislocations are of three types:
-
Congenital dislocation: present at birth, resulting from abnormal or incomplete development of the joint (e.g., the socket) during fetal growth — a well-known example is congenital dislocation of the hip, where the head of the femur does not sit properly in the hip socket from birth.
-
Traumatic dislocation: the most common type, caused by a sudden external force or injury — such as a fall, sports injury, or accident — that forcibly pushes the bone out of its joint, often accompanied by damage to surrounding ligaments/soft tissue.
