Periplaneta americana, the American cockroach, is a cosmopolitan, largely nocturnal insect belonging to Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Orthoptera, and shows all the fundamental features of its class - a chitinous exoskeleton, jointed appendages, and a body divided into head, thorax and abdomen. It is reddish-brown to black with a lighter margin on the first thoracic segment, favours warm, damp environments such as kitchens, drains, sewers and warehouses, and is omnivorous. Cockroaches are dioecious (sexes are separate) and oviparous, show some parental care of their egg cases, and are cursorial animals - built for fast running rather than flight.
