Step 1. Begin the diagram at the wide mouth opening into the buccal cavity, where the large, sticky, bilobed tongue (attached in front, free behind) lies on the floor; the upper jaw carries small maxillary teeth and two patches of vomerine teeth, and the buccal cavity leads back through the pharynx.

Step 2. From the pharynx, draw a short tube, the oesophagus, connecting to the stomach, where hydrochloric acid and gastric juice begin digestion, converting food into chyme.

Step 3. The stomach opens into the duodenum, the first part of the intestine; here two ducts join in - the bile duct, carrying bile made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, and the pancreatic duct, carrying digestive juice from the pancreas - and both should be drawn as glands attached alongside the gut, not as part of the gut tube itself.

Step 4. The duodenum continues as the ileum, where digested nutrients are absorbed, and then narrows into the rectum, which finally opens into the cloaca - the shared chamber for the digestive, excretory and reproductive systems - which opens outside through the cloacal aperture. …
