The Profit and Loss Appropriation Account is a nominal account prepared as a direct continuation of the firm's Profit and Loss Account. Once net profit for the year has been arrived at in the P&L Account, it is transferred ("brought down") into the Appropriation Account, where it is divided among the partners according to the terms of the partnership deed.
Purpose
Its purpose is purely to work out how net profit is shared: interest on capital and any salary or commission due to partners are deducted; a transfer to General Reserve, if required, is deducted; interest on drawings charged to partners is added back; and the resulting divisible profit is finally shared among the partners in their agreed profit-sharing ratio.
