A trophic level is an organism's feeding position in a food chain (from the Greek trophē, food), numbered by counting the feeding steps from the base upward: producers (green plants) occupy the first trophic level (T1); herbivores/primary consumers (e.g. a rabbit) occupy the second (T2); carnivores/secondary consumers or primary carnivores (e.g. a snake preying on the rabbit) occupy the third (T3); and carnivores that eat other carnivores — tertiary consumers or secondary carnivores (e.g. an eagle preying on the snake) — occupy the fourth (T4). Omnivores such as a crow, which eat both plants and animals, can occupy more than one trophic level depending on their current diet. A food chain is the linear path energy takes moving from producers to top carnivores, one trophic level at a time, and every ecosystem contains two basic types. The grazing food chain starts with living green-plant producers and is fed ultimately by the sun: producer (grass) → primary consumer (mouse) → secondary consumer (snake) → tertiary consumer (eagle).
