A food chain is defined as the sequence of organisms in a community through which food energy passes, each organism feeding on the organism preceding it and in turn being eaten by the organism following it. It always begins with a producer (a green plant or other autotroph, which captures solar energy through photosynthesis), followed by a primary consumer (herbivore, which eats the producer), then one or more secondary/tertiary consumers (carnivores, which eat other consumers), and ends with decomposers (bacteria and fungi) that break down the dead remains of all levels, returning nutrients to the soil.
A simple example: grass (producer) -> grasshopper (primary consumer/herbivore) -> frog (secondary consumer) -> snake (tertiary consumer) -> hawk (top/quaternary consumer).
