Environmental benefits of Rain Water Harvesting
The environmental case for rainwater harvesting rests on a cluster of linked benefits. It promotes groundwater adequacy by actively recharging the water table rather than letting rainfall run off unused, and this stored reserve helps mitigate the effects of drought when rainfall is scarce. By reducing surface run-off directly, it also cuts both soil erosion and flood hazard, since less water is left to scour topsoil or overwhelm drainage systems during heavy rain. Recharging groundwater through filtered percolation additionally improves groundwater quality and reduces salinity compared with unmanaged aquifer depletion.
