Plant Regeneration Pathway
Plant regeneration is the process by which a complete plant is rebuilt from an explant, and sections 5.3 through 5.3.3 have already covered the raw material (the explant) and the intermediate stage (callus) this process typically passes through. From that starting material, regeneration can proceed along either of two distinct developmental pathways: somatic embryogenesis, in which embryo-like structures form and grow into plantlets, or organogenesis, in which shoots and roots are induced to form directly. Figures 5.9 and 5.10 map both pathways out in full, from the original explant - whether taken from a meristem, shoot apex, stem, leaf, root or node - through callus (in the indirect route) or s …
What this figure shows. A flow diagram tracing an explant (from meristem, shoot apex, stem, leaf, root or node) through direct or indirect embryogenesis to virus-free plantlets, or through multiple shoot induction (micropropagation) with root induction, hardening and transfer to field, or through embryoid formation, hardening and transfe …
What this figure shows. A second flow diagram contrasting direct organogenesis (explant to shoot/root organogenesis directly) with indirect organogenesis (explant to callus, then to root or shoot organogenesis), and direct somatic embryogenesis (explant to somatic embryo directly) with indirect somatic embryogenesis (explant to callus to somatic embryo), each pathway en …
