Green manuring improves soil fertility by growing and then ploughing a green crop directly into the field to decompose.

Green manuring is a traditional and widely practised method of organically enriching agricultural soil. It involves sowing a quick-growing crop -- most commonly a leguminous species such as sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea), dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata/sesban), cluster bean, or cowpea, though non-leguminous green manure crops are also used -- specifically for the purpose of soil improvement rather than harvest.

When the crop reaches a suitable stage of vegetative growth, typically just before flowering, it is ploughed or dug directly into the same field. The buried green plant material is broken down in situ by soil microorganisms, releasing its stored organic matter and nutrients back into the soil.

Leguminous green manure crops offer a particular advantage: their roots bear nodules containing symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobium), which convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms usable by plants. When the plant is ploughed under, this fixed nitrogen becomes available to the following main crop, reducing the need for chemical nitrogenous fertilizers.
