Interhalogen compounds are covalent compounds made of two different halogens (general formula XXn′XX'_n), formed by direct combination of the halogens; examples span ABAB, AB3AB_3, AB5AB_5 and AB7AB_7 types.

When two different halogen elements combine, they form covalent compounds called interhalogen compounds. In such a compound XXn′XX'_n, XX is the halogen with the larger size and lower electronegativity (i.e. the less electronegative/lower in the group among F,Cl,Br,IF, Cl, Br, I), and X′X' is the smaller, more electronegative halogen; nn can be 1, 3, 5, or 7 depending on how many atoms of X′X' can be accommodated around XX (limited by the size of XX).

They are generally prepared by direct combination of the two halogens under controlled conditions, e.g.:

Cl2+F2→2ClFCl_2 + F_2 \rightarrow 2ClF

Br2+3F2→2BrF3Br_2 + 3F_2 \rightarrow 2BrF_3

Types and examples:

  • XX′XX' type: ClFClF, BrFBrF, IClICl, IBrIBr
  • XX3′XX'_3 type: ClF3ClF_3, BrF3BrF_3, ICl3ICl_3
  • XX5′XX'_5 type: BrF5BrF_5, IF5IF_5
  • XX7′XX'_7 type: IF7IF_7 …
