The Freundlich adsorption isotherm, xm=kP1/n\dfrac{x}{m}=kP^{1/n}, is a purely empirical curve-fit with no theoretical derivation, and it fails at both pressure extremes — it never predicts the observed saturation of adsorption at high pressure, nor does it correctly describe behaviour at very low pressure.

The Freundlich isotherm relates the mass of gas adsorbed per unit mass of adsorbent (x/mx/m) to the equilibrium pressure PP (at constant temperature) as xm=kP1/n(n>1)\dfrac{x}{m} = kP^{1/n}\quad(n>1) Its limitations are:

  1. Purely empirical, no theoretical justification: the equation and its constants kk and nn are derived by fitting experimental data, with no underlying physical/theoretical model explaining why adsorption should follow this particular power-law form.
  2. Fails at high pressure: at sufficiently high pressure, the amount of gas adsorbed should reach a maximum (saturation, as the adsorbent surface becomes fully covered by a monolayer), but the Freundlich isotherm predicts x/mx/m continuing to increase indefinitely (proportional to P1/nP^{1/n}) — it cannot account for the experimentally observed levelling off at high pressure. …
