Actinides display variable oxidation states from +3 up to +7, with the higher states most accessible for the earlier actinides (Th to Am) and +3 becoming the dominant, most stable state for the later, heavier members.

Unlike the lanthanides, which are almost exclusively confined to the +3 oxidation state because their 4f orbitals are deeply buried and do not readily participate in bonding, the actinides' 5f, 6d and 7s orbitals lie much closer in energy to one another. This near-degeneracy allows more of their electrons to be involved in bonding, so actinides show a much wider spread of oxidation states: thorium is characteristically +4, protactinium reaches +5, uranium commonly shows +4 and +6 (as in the uranyl ion UO22+UO_2^{2+}), neptunium and plutonium can reach +7 and +6 respectively under oxidising conditions, while +3 remains accessible throughout the series and becomes progressively the dominant and most stable state for the heavier actinides (from americium onw …
