Chromate (CrO42−CrO_4^{2-}, yellow) and dichromate (Cr2O72−Cr_2O_7^{2-}, orange) interconvert reversibly with pH: acidification converts chromate into dichromate, and adding alkali reverses it.

Conversion: When an aqueous solution of potassium chromate (K2CrO4K_2CrO_4) is treated with a dilute mineral acid (e.g. dilute H2SO4H_2SO_4 or dilute HCl), two chromate ions condense to form one dichromate ion:

2K2CrO4+H2SO4⟶K2Cr2O7+K2SO4+H2O2K_2CrO_4 + H_2SO_4 \longrightarrow K_2Cr_2O_7 + K_2SO_4 + H_2O

In ionic form:

2CrO42−+2H+⟶Cr2O72−+H2O2CrO_4^{2-} + 2H^+ \longrightarrow Cr_2O_7^{2-} + H_2O
