Exercise 5.5 · Q8

Q.Assume that water issuing from the end of a horizontal pipe, 7.5 m7.5\,\text m above the ground, describes a parabolic path. The vertex of the parabolic path is at the end of the pipe. At a position 2.5 m2.5\,\text m below the line of the pipe, the flow of water has curved outward 3 m3\,\text m beyond the vertical line through the end of the pipe. How far beyond this vertical line will the water strike the ground?

Model the water's path as a downward-opening parabola with vertex at the pipe's end; the given intermediate point fixes aa, and the ground level (a full 7.5 m7.5\,\text m drop) is where to evaluate for the final answer.

Step 1. Set up. Vertex at (0,0)(0,0) (pipe's end), yy measured downward as negative: x2=−4ayx^2=-4ay.

Step 2. Use the given point to find aa. 2.5 m2.5\,\text m below the pipe, 3 m3\,\text m out ⇒\Rightarrow point (3,−2.5)(3,-2.5). …
