RADAR AND APPLICATIONS
RADAR stands for RAdio Detection And Ranging -- one of the most important applications of communication systems, used to sense, detect and precisely locate distant objects such as aircraft, ships and spacecraft, and to determine the angle, range or velocity of objects that are entirely invisible to the human eye. A RADAR system works by using its own antenna to radiate an electromagnetic signal outward into space in all directions; when this signal strikes a target object, it is reflected, or re-radiated, in many directions, and part of this reflected (echo) signal travels back and is picked up by the same radar antenna, which delivers it to the receiver for processing and amplification. The target's range is determined simply from the time taken for the signal to make the full round trip from the radar to the object and back, since the signal travels at the known speed of light. RADAR technology finds extensive applications across almost every field: in the military, it is used for locating and detecting targets; in navigation, it supports ship-borne surface search, air search, and missile-guidance systems; …
