Special Theory of Relativity
In 1905 Einstein overturned the common-sense idea that time and length are absolute. His special theory of relativity deals with observers moving at constant velocity relative to one another (inertial frames) and rests on just two postulates.
The two postulates
- Principle of relativity: the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames — no experiment can single out one frame as "truly at rest."
- Constancy of the speed of light: light travels in vacuum at the same speed for every observer, regardless of the motion of the source or the observer.
The second postulate is the radical one — insisting that everyone measures the same forces time and length themselves to depend on the observer.
Two consequences
Both effects are governed by the Lorentz factor
- Time dilation: a moving clock runs slow. A time interval measured in the clock's own (rest) frame is observed as
- Length contraction: a moving object is shortened along its direction of motion. A rest length is observed as …
