Pedigree analysis traces how a trait is inherited through the generations of a family using a symbol-based family-tree chart.

In humans, controlled breeding experiments (as done in pea plants) are not possible. Instead, geneticists study how a trait passes through generations of a real family by drawing a pedigree.

A pedigree is a chart (family tree) that records the occurrence of a trait across generations. Standard symbols are used:

  • Square = male, circle = female.
  • A filled/shaded symbol = affected (shows the trait); an unfilled symbol = unaffected.
  • A horizontal line joining a square and a circle = a mating (marriage); a vertical line leads down to their offspring.
  • Generations are labelled with Roman numerals (I, II, III).

By examining a pedigree, one can deduce the pattern of inheritance of the trait — whether it is:

  • Dominant or recessive, and
