Medical robots operate (precision surgical systems), rehabilitate (exoskeletons, prosthetics), serve (delivery and disinfection robots in hospitals), automate (pharmacy/lab handling), connect (telepresence for remote care) and assist (elderly-care robots).

The idea. Robotics contributes wherever medicine needs superhuman precision, tireless repetition, protection from infection risk, or presence at a distance. This is an explore-type activity; the model survey below covers the main real-world roles.

1. Surgical robots

Systems such as the da Vinci Surgical System translate a surgeon's hand movements into micro-movements of tiny instruments inside the patient. Benefits: sub-millimetre precision with tremor filtered out, operations through very small incisions (minimally invasive), magnified 3D vision, less blood loss and pain, shorter hospital stays. Used in urology, cardiac, gynaecological and general surgery.

2. Rehabilitation and assistive robots

  • Robotic exoskeletons support stroke and spinal-injury patients through guided, repeated walking/arm exercises — repetition a human physiotherapist cannot sustain.
  • Robotic prosthetics — sensor-driven artificial limbs that respond to muscle/nerve signals, restoring grip and gait.

3. Hospital service and disinfection robots

Autonomous robots ferry medicines, lab samples, linen and meals along hospital corridors, freeing staff for care. UV-C disinfection robots sterilise operation theatres and isolation wards — used at scale during the COVID-19 pandemic, when robots also delivered food to infectious patients, reducing staff exposure.

4. Pharmacy and laboratory automation

Dispensing robots pick, count and label medicines with near-zero error; lab robots handle thousands of samples (sorting, pipetting, testing) far faster and more consistently than manual processing.

5. Telepresence and remote care …
