The idea. The three standard cloud service models differ by how much of the stack the provider manages:
- IaaS — provider gives raw infrastructure: virtual machines, storage, network. The customer installs and manages everything above (OS configuration, runtime, platform, applications).
- PaaS — provider gives a ready platform (runtime, tools, middleware); the customer only deploys code.
- SaaS — provider gives the finished software itself (e.g. Gmail); the customer just uses it.
Applying it to the question. The company wants "a set of basic services, such as virtual server provisioning and on-demand storage, that can be combined into a platform" by the company itself. Two signals decide it:
- The offerings named — virtual servers and storage — are the defining IaaS primitives.
- The customer, not the provider, assembles them into a platform. If the provider supplied the platform ready-made, it would be PaaS; here the platform is built from the rented infrastructure.
Why each other option is wrong
- a) Platform as a Service — in PaaS the provider hands over a ready deployment platform (e.g. Google App Engine); you never provision virtual servers yourself. The question's company wants the raw pieces, not the finished platform. …
