WoT is to IoT what the Web is to the Internet.
The idea. The best way to see the relation is the classic analogy: the Internet is the network that connects computers; the Web is the application layer (HTTP, URLs, HTML) running on top of it that made the Internet easy to use. In exactly the same way:
- IoT (Internet of Things) is the connectivity layer: physical devices — sensors, appliances, vehicles, wearables — are given network interfaces so they can send data and receive commands over the Internet. However, IoT devices from different manufacturers speak many different, often incompatible protocols, which makes building applications across them hard.
- WoT (Web of Things) is the application layer over IoT: it re-uses the mature, universal standards of the World Wide Web — HTTP/HTTPS, URLs, REST APIs, JSON, web sockets and the browser — as a common language for the things. Each device (or its data/actions) is exposed like a web resource with a URL, so a smart bulb or a temperature sensor can be read and controlled the same way a web page is fetched.
How they relate, point by point
- Layering — WoT sits on top of IoT: IoT provides connected things; WoT standardises how applications talk to them. Every WoT system is an IoT system underneath.
- Purpose — IoT solves connection (getting the thing online); WoT solves integration and interoperability (making all things usable through one familiar interface). …
