Mitochondria are 'power houses' because aerobic respiration (Krebs cycle, electron transport, oxidative phosphorylation) occurs in them, producing most of the cell's ATP energy.

The statement 'Mitochondria are the power houses of the cell' is justified because mitochondria are the main sites of energy release and ATP synthesis in the cell. The justification:

1. Structure suited to the function:

• Each mitochondrion has a double membrane. The inner membrane is folded inwards to form cristae, which greatly increase the surface area.

• The inner membrane bears stalked particles called F1 particles (oxysomes / ATP synthase) that actually synthesise ATP.

• The inner compartment, the matrix, contains the enzymes of the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle), along with mitochondrial DNA and 70S ribosomes.

2. Site of aerobic respiration:

• During cellular respiration, the products of glycolysis enter the mitochondria, where the Krebs cycle occurs in the matrix and the electron transport chain (ETC) operates on the cristae.

• The oxidation of respiratory substrates (like glucose) releases energy, which is used to synthesise ATP by oxidative phosphorylation.

3. ATP as energy currency: …
