Mitochondria are the "power houses" of the cell - double-membraned organelles with inner cristae and a matrix; they carry out aerobic respiration and produce ATP.

The "power houses" of the cell are the MITOCHONDRIA.

Structure:

  • Mitochondria are usually rod-shaped or sausage-shaped organelles found in the cytoplasm.
  • Each is bounded by a DOUBLE membrane - an outer membrane and an inner membrane, with an intermembrane space between them.
  • The inner membrane is folded inward to form finger-like projections called CRISTAE, which greatly increase the surface area for reactions.
  • On the inner membrane are small stalked particles called oxysomes (F1 particles / elementary particles) that contain the enzymes for ATP synthesis.
  • The inner space enclosed by the inner membrane is the MATRIX, which contains respiratory enzymes, ribosomes (70S), and its own circular DNA (so mitochondria are semi-autonomous).

Functions:

  • Mitochondria are the sites of AEROBIC RESPIRATION - the Krebs cycle occurs in the matrix and the electron transport chain / oxidative phosphorylation occurs on the inner membrane. …
