Homosporous = one type of spore (e.g. Lycopodium, ferns); heterosporous = two types, microspores + megaspores (e.g. Selaginella, Salvinia/Marsilea).

Pteridophytes reproduce by spores. Depending on whether they form one kind or two kinds of spores, they are grouped as homosporous or heterosporous — an important concept in the NCERT/CBSE-aligned TS Intermediate plant-kingdom unit.

  • Homosporous pteridophytes — produce only one type of spore, all of the same size. Each spore germinates into a bisexual (monoecious) gametophyte (prothallus) bearing both antheridia and archegonia.
    • Examples: Lycopodium, Dryopteris (fern).
  • Heterosporous pteridophytes — produce two kinds of spores of different sizes: small microspores (form the male gametophyte) and large megaspores (form the female gametophyte). The gametophytes are therefore unisexual.
