Heterospory = producing two types of spores (micro- and mega-); it foreshadows the seed habit, and is seen in Selaginella and Salvinia.

Heterospory: Certain pteridophytes are heterosporous — i.e., they produce two kinds of spores, small ones called microspores and larger ones called megaspores. The microspores germinate to give rise to the male gametophyte, and the megaspores give rise to the female gametophyte.
