In flowering plants, the flower is part of the diploid sporophyte, but it produces haploid gametophytic structures (pollen grains and embryo sac) through meiosis, which in turn produce the haploid gametes. Ploidy of each part:

  • (a) Ovary — diploid (2n): The ovary is part of the pistil, a sporophytic structure of the diploid plant body. It contains ovules, within which meiosis occurs to produce the haploid embryo sac (female gametophyte).
  • (b) Anther — diploid (2n): The anther itself, as a sporophytic organ (part of the stamen), is diploid. (Note: inside the anther, the pollen mother cells undergo meiosis to produce haploid microspores, which develop into haploid pollen grains — but the anther wall/tissue itself is diploid.)
  • (c) Egg — haploid (n): The egg cell is formed within the embryo sac (female gametophyte), which develops from a haploid megaspore produced by meiosis; hence the egg is haploid.
  • (d) Pollen (pollen grain) — haploid (n): The pollen grain is the male gametophyte, developing from a haploid microspore produced by meiotic division of the diploid pollen mother cell within the anther. …
