The kinetic molecular theory explains gas behaviour using a small set of idealized assumptions about how gas particles move and interact.

Postulates of the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases:

  1. A gas consists of a very large number of extremely small particles (atoms or molecules) that are in continuous, random, straight-line motion.
  2. The actual volume occupied by the gas molecules themselves is negligible compared to the total volume of the gas — molecules are treated as point masses.
  3. There are no intermolecular forces of attraction or repulsion between the gas molecules (ideal gas assumption); molecules move independently of one another.
  4. Molecules collide with each other and with the walls of the container; these collisions are perfectly elastic — total kinetic energy is conserved, though individual molecules may gain or lose energy in a collision.
  5. Pressure exerted by the gas is due to the collisions of gas molecules with the walls of the container.
  6. Between successive collisions, a molecule travels in a straight line with uniform velocity. …
