Boltzmann's constant is the universal gas constant divided by Avogadro's number; it relates the average kinetic energy of a single molecule to temperature.

The ideal gas constant RR applies per mole of gas. Dividing RR by Avogadro's number NAN_A (the number of molecules per mole) gives the corresponding constant per molecule — Boltzmann's constant, kBk_B:

kB=RNA=8.314 J K−1mol−16.022×1023 mol−1=1.380649×10−23 J K−1k_B = \frac{R}{N_A} = \frac{8.314\ \text{J K}^{-1}\text{mol}^{-1}}{6.022 \times 10^{23}\ \text{mol}^{-1}} = 1.380649 \times 10^{-23}\ \text{J K}^{-1}
