Kinetic theory models a gas as a swarm of tiny, non-interacting particles in constant random motion, colliding elastically, whose average kinetic energy is proportional to temperature.

Postulates of the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases:

  1. A gas consists of a very large number of extremely small particles (molecules), which are considered as point masses — i.e. their actual volume is negligible compared to the total volume of the container.

  2. There is no force of attraction or repulsion between the molecules of a gas at ordinary temperature and pressure — the molecules are assumed to move independently of one another.

  3. The molecules of a gas are in a state of constant, random, straight-line motion in all directions, colliding with each other and with the walls of the container.

  4. All collisions (molecule–molecule and molecule–wall) are perfectly elastic, meaning there is no net loss of kinetic energy during a collision — although individual molecules may gain or lose energy in a collision, the total kinetic energy of the system remains constant.

  5. The pressure exerted by a gas arises from the continuous collisions of the gas molecules against the walls of the container (the force of these collisions per unit area of the wall).
