Graphite's flat layers, held by weak van der Waals forces, slide over one another easily, letting it act as a lubricant.

In graphite, each carbon atom is sp2 hybridised and is bonded to three other carbon atoms in the same plane, forming a hexagonal (honeycomb) layer of fused six-membered rings.

These two-dimensional layers are stacked one above another. Within a layer the C-C bonds are strong (covalent), but the different layers are held together only by weak van der Waals forces, and the layers are relatively far apart.
