Escape velocity is the minimum speed to project a body so it escapes a planet's gravity forever; equating kinetic and potential energy gives v_e = sqrt(2GM/R) = sqrt(2gR), about 11.2 km/s for Earth.

Definition: Escape velocity is the minimum velocity with which a body must be projected from the surface of a planet so that it just escapes the planet's gravitational field and never returns.

Derivation:

Consider a body of mass m on the surface of a planet of mass M and radius R. To escape, the body must be given enough kinetic energy to overcome the gravitational potential energy that binds it to the planet.

The gravitational potential energy of the body at the surface is:

U = - GMm / R

To just escape, the body should reach infinity with zero velocity, where both its kinetic and potential energies are zero. By conservation of energy:

(KE at surface) + (PE at surface) = 0 …
