The bomb at rest has zero momentum; by conservation of momentum the two fragments must have equal and opposite momenta (m1 v1 = -m2 v2), so they fly off in opposite directions.

Before the explosion, the bomb is at rest, so its initial linear momentum is zero.

The explosion is caused by internal forces (the chemical reaction inside the bomb). There is no external force acting on the system, so the total linear momentum of the system is conserved.

Therefore the total momentum after the explosion must also be zero.

Suppose the bomb breaks into two pieces of masses m1 and m2, moving with velocities v1 and v2. Conservation of momentum gives:

Total final momentum = Total initial momentum

m1 v1 + m2 v2 = 0

m1 v1 = - m2 v2
