A carburetor uses Bernoulli's principle — a constriction speeds up the airflow and lowers its pressure, which draws in and atomizes fuel.

Bernoulli's principle states that for a horizontal flow of an ideal fluid, as the speed of the fluid increases, its pressure decreases (since the sum P+12ρv2P + \tfrac{1}{2}\rho v^2 stays constant along a streamline for horizontal flow).

In a carburetor, air drawn in by the engine's piston passes through a narrowed section called the venturi throat. By the equation of continuity (Av = constant), the narrower cross-section forces the air to speed up considerably as it passes through this throat. According to Bernoulli's principle, this increase in air speed causes a corresponding drop in air pressure at the throat, well below atmospheric pressure.
