A spinning ball moving through air experiences unequal air speeds on its two sides, which (by Bernoulli's principle) creates a pressure difference and hence a sideways force that curves its path — this is the Magnus effect.

When an object (say, a ball) spins as it moves through a fluid like air, the layer of fluid near its surface is dragged along by the spin. On one side of the ball, the surface motion (due to spin) is in the same direction as the ball's forward motion through the air, so the relative air speed on that side is higher. On the opposite side, the surface motion opposes the forward motion, so the relative air speed there is lower.
